“I believe it’s time” – Ryan Clark explains why the Cowboys should DUMP wide receiver Amari Cooper
Ryan Clark and Amari Cooper
With the Free agency market coming up, every team in the league has to make tough decisions about which players to cut, which ones to extend to build a group that is capable to win the Super Bowl.
Amari Cooper, wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys is one of the players whom the organization might let go this offseason. Cooper was widely considered to be the top WR prospect for the 2015 draft. However, his performance this season hasn’t been to that stat-line. So, it is highly possible that Cooper won’t be a Cowboys in 2022.
Amari Cooper hasn’t been worth a $100M contract extension
Amari Cooper was picked 4th overall by the Oakland Raiders in the 2015 NFL draft. After a three year stint with the Raiders, Cooper was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2019 draft. Having shown that he was a stalwart guy, Cooper signed a five-year contract extension with the Cowboys worth $100 million, which featured $60 million guaranteed, $40 million at signing, and a $20 million injury designation that becomes fully guaranteed in 2022.
However, his performance this season was below average as he finished the 2021 regular season with 68 receptions for 865 yards and a career-high eight touchdown. The front office of the Cowboys was definitely not content with the receiver’s performance. “If you’re going to pay somebody a lot of money, you want them to be the best at what they do, whether that’s yards, whether that’s receptions, whether that’s touchdowns,” the Dallas Cowboys COO said recently, alluding to the fact that Cooper is on the books in 2022 for $22 million. “Once you pay that player a lot of money, then with that comes high expectations.”
Former NFL safety turned analyst Ryan Clark explained why Cowboys should dump Amari Cooper on talk show Get Up on ESPN. “CeeDee Lamb has obviously shown that he’s the true No.1 go-to guy in that wide receiver room. And if you can move on from Amari Cooper will take a minimum impact to the salary cap. I believe it’s time you do that. He wasn’t even a top 15 receiver this year in 2021,” Ryan said justifying his statement.
While Cooper entered the league with a lot of potential, the Cowboys are yet to see him make big game-winning plays when the team is in a tight spot. So, maybe the best thing for the Cowboys to do is part ways with the 27-year old and look for other receivers who can help them win a long-overdue Super Bowl.
