The CW Network renewed the show All American for the sixth season on January 2023. It is an American sports drama that premiered on CW Network on October 18, 2018. The series follows a high school football player from South Los Angeles, who gets recruited to play for the rich Beverly Hills High School. Furthermore, former NFL player Spencer Paysinger worked as a consultant producer on the series, which raises the question, is the sports drama based on the life of the linebacker?

The short answer to that question is yes. The show is loosely based on the life of the former Super Bowl Champion Spencer Paysinger. However, the show producers did take some creative liberty and changed some of the details for cinematic purposes. For example, Paysinger actually spent his whole high school career at Beverly Hills High, unlike in the series where they showed the character Spencer James (based on Spencer Paysinger) going back to his old high school for a short time.

Another such example is that Paysinger never got shot in real life, but in the second season of the show, James was shown as a victim of a gang shooting. Furthermore, one of the biggest changes is the story of Spencer’s father. In the show, Spencer’s father passed away from a long illness, but in real life, he is well and alive.

Moreover, in real life, Spencer’s dad was the assistant coach and later the head coach of Beverly Hills High, but in real life, he was shown as a head coach of a different school and was longing for a chance to coach his son one day. And one more example is Spencer was a linebacker in real life rather than a wide receiver, as shown in the series.

Before the show premiered on the CW Network, the former Miami Dolphins linebacker sat down with ESPN for an interview, where he revealed the changes he made in the show All American, which is based on his real life.

“I wanted to tell the story of, ‘We’re a lot more similar on these different sides of the track than you guys think,” Paysinger said. Furthermore, he also revealed he made the changes since he didn’t want it to be a “Spencer went to Beverly and everything was great” kind of story.

In real life, the 6’2″ linebacker attended the University of Oregon after his high school career and then went to play for three NFL teams, including the NY Giants and the Carolina Panthers. After his seven-year-long NFL career, he wrote the script for the show All American and is now pursuing a career in the film industry.
