Is trading Aaron Rodgers the right thing for the Green Bay Packers to do?

Is trading Aaron Rodgers the right thing for the Green Bay Packers to do?

Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers may part ways this offseason. After loads of drama between the two parties last offseason, it seems like they could actually split this time around.

While the 2020 season’s disappointing NFC championship loss was painful enough, the Packers’ 2021 divisional-round loss probably stung more given that they truly had a roster that could win the Super Bowl. It seems like Aaron Rodgers just can’t put it together when the playoffs come around.

Given that, many are wondering if Rodgers will want a different team for 2022. While Rodgers hasn’t confirmed any plans for this season yet, the Packers have made it very clear that they absolutely want him to remain in Green Bay.

With just one year remaining on his contract, it’s likely that if Rodgers does want to stay in Green Bay, he’d want to sign an extension. With the salary cap issues the Packers have, the real question is, should they try and trade him now while his stock is at it’s highest?

Could the Packers trade Aaron Rodgers even if he wants to stay?

Looking at this from the Packers point of view, they just want to win Super Bowls. Aaron Rodgers gives them the best chance to do that regardless of what you’re paying him. But for a second, let’s take the monetary issue into account.

With Rodgers coming off back to back MVPs, there are definitely teams that want him and will give up a lot to get him. If the Packers want to save a massive amount of money and get a lot in return, trading Rodgers could be the right move for them. Now it seems that they aren’t confident in Jordan Love but they’ll have multiple first round picks to try and find their next franchise quarterback.

On the flip side, it might not make any sense to trade Aaron Rodgers as James Palmer backed on ‘Good Morning Football.’ He was quoted saying “I don’t know how you could think this is a smart play when Aaron Rodgers give you the best chance to win a Super Bowl. I’m not sure how many teams in the NFC could say that they have a legitimate chance to compete for the Super Bowl this season.”

Palmer further added “Aaron Rodgers is playing the best football of his career in the last two seasons. I could see if there was a decline in his play then maybe you try and move on. But, it’s not like he’s going in a direction of ‘let’s try and move on from him before it’s too late.’ I just don’t think it’s something the Packers do. Moving from Rodgers probably won’t allow you to compete for a Super Bowl.”

The Packers have made it clear that they don’t want to move on from Aaron Rodgers. Now, they haven’t got back to the Super Bowl since winning it in the 2010 season but they have made the NFC championship in 2 of the last 3 seasons. Now Tom Brady is gone, the Packers main competition comes from the Rams. If they keep Rodgers and get it right in the playoffs, that’s a Super Bowl team.
