The NFL overtime rules have undergone a massive tweak that will now see both teams being able to possess the ball, something that was only possible if a touchdown wasn’t scored by the team that received the opening kickoff. It wasn’t entirely seen positively, however.

The official change states “Both teams will have the opportunity to possess the ball in overtime in the postseason. If the score is tied after each team has possessed the ball, the next score wins. If the team kicking off to start the overtime period scores a safety on the receiving team’s initial possession, the team that kicked off is the winner.”

So while both teams do get the ball, the sudden-death aspect of NFL overtime hasn’t changed. That is where people are a little bit annoyed because the team that possesses the ball first still has an advantage.

Mike Pereira is one of the few people that actually is a fan of the new NFL overtime rule and he joined Colin Cowherd to explain why he feels that way.

In a segment of ‘The Herd’, Mike Pereira was quoted saying “I think it was necessary. You need to think about not just the players and coaches but the fans as well. Everyone was left dissatisfied with what happened in the Kansas City-Buffalo game. And, I think it was a simple tweak.”

Pereira further added “I just think that this is fair. And, I think that sometimes you have to change rules that are simple and fan-friendly and I applaud the fact that they are making this change.”

It’s fair to say that Bills fans are certainly fans of the new NFL overtime rules but that isn’t the case for everyone simply because of the sudden death rule. But, Pereira brings up a point about it being fair because it certainly does add a new entertaining aspect of the game which relates to risk management.

Teams now have to decide whether or not to go for a 2 point conversion if they score a touchdown simply because, it could decide the game. These new rules may not be overwhelmingly pleasing but they certainly have added a new aspect to the game, at least for the playoffs.
