One of the biggest offseason trades that shocked the entire NFL more so than Aaron Rodgers becoming the highest-paid QB in the league and even Tom Brady announcing his retirement after 40 days was the Cleveland Browns signing Deshaun Watson.

The Browns were not satisfied with the outcome Baker Mayfield was providing them despite being the No.1 draft pick of 2018. So, Cleveland decided to move on from him and acquire former Texans QB Deshaun Watson who hasn’t played any games since 2020.

Nick Wright on First Things First bashed the Browns’ front office for carrying out the Watson trade in an unprofessional way. The Browns left Baker Mayfield hanging since they didn’t secure a trade for him before bringing on Watson into the fold. “What the Browns are doing is embarrassing,” Wright said. “They made a choice to move on from the QB that took them from the depths of not just the NFL cellar, but all of sports.”

Before Mayfield stepped in as the Browns’ QB, the team hadn’t won a single game in their last 19 games. The team had become a laughing stock for everyone around the world. Then came in the Heisman Trophy winning QB from Okhlama who ended their 635-day streak, and went on to set the rookie quarterback record for passing touchdowns. He did struggle during his second year but soon found his footing as he led the Browns to their first playoff appearance in 2002 and victory since 1994 in 2020.

Despite all that Baker Mayfield‘s done for the organization, the Browns have made sure he won’t get a fair price for his skills now that he’s stranded in Cleveland without a future. “So, the Browns should just go to the last page of the story and cut Baker Mayfield. They made a choice, they wanted to move on, they should now move on, and Baker should be able to resume his career elsewhere. I think the idea that if they hadn’t gotten Deshaun they would’ve patched things up with Baker Mayfield, that was laughable,” Wright added.

The right thing to do should’ve been cementing a trade for Baker Mayfield first and then acquiring Watson rather than the other way around. Now, the right thing to do would be to cut Mayfield from Cleveland.
