“I don’t know why people are blowing it up” – Lamar Jackson irked at the media for taking his ‘I Need $’ Twitter header out of context
Lamar Jackson
Lamar Jackson is yet to extend his rookie contract with the Baltimore Ravens. The electric quarterback will be a free agent at the end of the 2022 season and is looking to score a sweet deal for himself before he enters his final year just like every other player does in their final year of the contract.
One peculiar thing about Jackson is that he is his own agent which isn’t common at all. Recently, the 25-year-old QB updated his Twitter headers which sparked hilariously responses that were along the same line, getting the Ravens to extend his rookie contract.
Lamar Jackson can’t believe the tales the media spins to create unnecessary tension between players and teams
Lamar Jackson, the 2019 NFL MVP changed his Twitter header to a photo that reads “I Need $”. Internet was quick to assume that this was Jackson’s unique way to ask the Baltimore Ravens for a contract extension. However, this is not why the star QB updated his header. The photo comes from a character in the movie How High. This movie stars rappers Method Man and Redman, named I Need Money, who wears a gold grill on his teeth with the words “I Need $.”
The Ravens’ QB found it funny which is the only reason why he used it on his Twitter handle. Jackson was visibly irked by the media for making it sound like he was hungry for more money and in a sense blackmailing his team. “I don’t know why people are blowing it up. I just saw Bleacher Report post it. They just take anything that’s posted on social media and just blow it up, and try to think for you. I don’t take it too seriously,” Jackson told USA TODAY Sports.
“They’re making it seem like I’m talking to the Ravens when I’m not. Our contract discussion is going on already. But it ain’t about that though. I’m not putting my business life on social media. I won’t ever do that. I won’t put my personal life on social media. I’ll show stuff, but I won’t throw subliminal [messages] out. That’s not me.”
A few years back $20 million seemed like the amount an elite quarterback should be worth. But times have changed since and now QBs like Jimmy Garoppolo, Matt Ryan, Ryan Tannehill, Carson Wentz, and several others make at or around $30 million a year. Even Derek Carr makes around $40 million per year.
The highest-paid QB in the league is Aaron Rodgers with a whopping $50 million per year contract. It won’t come as a big surprise if Lamar Jackson is given close to $40-45 million either by the Ravens or some other team. It might be a stretch to assume he would be given more money than Rodgers but one can easily argue that he is a lot younger than the Packers’ signal-caller.
Jackson is hopeful that he and Ravens to agree to a new deal before the start of training camp which commences on July 26. It’ll be interesting to see whether the Ravens agree to extend Jackson who led them to the playoffs three consecutive times or do they look towards someone else to lead them.
