“You have to prove you’re worthy to become head coach”: Marvin Lewis iterates his experience in wake of Brian Flores controversy

The whole NFL community has been shocked after Brian Flores revealed about the racism incidents in his time. There has been widespread outrage over the incident and several people have taken to social media to talk about the unfair system.
Brian Flores has talked about the systematic racism he has faced as well as the discrimination in the hiring of black coaches in the NFL. He has filed an official lawsuit and hopes others will come to his help as well.
Marvin Lewis talks about a similar incident as to Brian Flores
Marvin Lewis has talked about the ‘sham interviews’ in NFL and how black coaches are just doing interviews for formality. He has reflected back on his interview experience with Carolina Panthers wherein he did the interview but didn’t get the job which is similar to Brian Flores’s story.
“I did an interview with the Carolina Panthers before John Fox got the job,” said Lewis. “And I can recall that we had lost to the Steelers in the second round of the playoffs and I remember sitting at home on Monday and, I think it was Chris Mortensen or someone else, they reported that Foxy would be named the head coach of the Panthers on Friday.

“And when I went to work Tuesday, Brian [Billick] came in, said, ‘I just got off the phone with Ozzie [Newsome] and the Panthers want you to come down and interview for the job.’ I said, ‘Coach, I just heard last night on TV that they’re gonna name Foxy the coach on Friday.’ So he goes back, he talks to Ozzie, he talks to their people, and I end up going down to Charlotte and meeting with the Richardson family and they said that wasn’t true and so forth. And they named John the head coach on Friday.“

Moreover, Marvin Lewis has just said with disappointment that black coaches(referring to Brian Flores) have to go for the interviews but the decision has already been taken by the teams and it doesn’t matter much how their interview goes.
“So, you know, I don’t know. Again, that’s the situation I was in. But you have to go. You have to go and prove that you’re worthy to become the head coach. You’re appreciative of the opportunity but what was supposedly gonna happen ended up happening in that case for sure.”
