“100% false”: Mary Kay Cabot says Baker Mayfield’s contract extension rumors are completely untrue
The Cleveland Browns were expected to make some changes after having a disastrous 2021 season and one man who particularly had terrible outings one after the other was Baker Mayfield. Baker was expected to guide his side to wins, however, throughout the season he failed to find his rhythm.
As a result, he was trolled mercilessly and speculations started arising that the Browns might want to release him. Although it isn’t clear where Baker will end up, Browns have signed Deshaun Watson and are all set to trade Mayfield in the near future.
“Browns and Baker Mayfield’s agent never engaged in substantive extensive talks”: Mary Kat Cabot
What comes as a new twist in the tale, former Browns star Joe Thomas on his podcast with former teammate Andrew Hawkins stated that Baker actually turned down a massive offer from the Browns. Thomas said that Mayfield turned down a $30 million per year contract extension offer from the Cleveland Browns last year.
“The truth is, the Browns and Mayfield’s agent, Tom Mills, never engaged in substantive extensive talks for the 2018 No. 1 overall pick after the Browns exercised his fifth-year option last April worth $18.86 million,” Cabot wrote.
“The plan was to possibly start talking extension in earnest around the trade deadline, but Mayfield was in the midst of the worst season of his career at that point, partly because of the torn labrum in his left non-throwing shoulder and the restrictive harness,” she added.
Many have opined that the way Browns have treated Mayfield is not right which is why Baker wants to leave the franchise as soon as possible. It will be interesting to see where he finally ends up.
