As per Michael Oher’s petition, “The Tuohy family negotiated a movie deal that gave them and their two biological children $225,000 each and 2.5% of the film’s net proceeds.”
Oher was allegedly deceived into signing a contract with 20th Century Fox, which gave away his story rights “without any payment whatsoever,”. “Michael received nothing,” Oher’s petition argues, for a “story that would not have existed without him.”
Sean Tuohy insists otherwise
In response to the allegations Sean Touhy told the Daily Memphian, “We didn’t make any money off the movie,” adding that Lewis “gave us half of his share of the money the author received for the film”.
“Everybody in the family got an equal share, including Michael. It was about $14,000 each,” Touhy insisted.
Even back in his 2011 memoir written alongside Don Yaeger, Michael Oher had not been supportive of the film’s portrayal of the player. In “I Beat the Odds: From Homelessness to ‘The Blind Side,’ and Beyond,” Oher wrote, “I felt like (the film) portrayed me as d-mb instead of as a kid who had never had consistent academic instruction and ended up thriving once he got it.”
“‘The Blind Side’ is about how one family helped me reach my fullest potential, but what about the people and experiences that all added up to putting me in their path? As anyone in my family will tell you, they were just part of a complicated series of events and personalities that helped me achieve success,” Oher wrote. “They were a huge part of it, but it was a journey I’d started a long time before.”
As per the final court orders, the Tuohy family has been officially removed of Ohen’s conservatorship and were “asked for a full accounting of the money the Tuohys earned using Oher’s name, to be paid his share of profits, and other compensatory damages.”
