If there’s one aspect of the NFL rules which has raised plenty of debate and questions over the past seasons, it has to be regarding the formulation of a perfect rule for Over Time. The league has gone back and forth on various outcomes, but has had to receive the wrath of the franchises for every decision they’ve taken.

Ahead of the 2022 season, Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who is also one of the 10 members of the NFL’s Competition comittee, gave his opinion on the impending changes to the Over time rules.

Two franchises, namely the Indianapolis Colts and the Philadelphia Eagles urged that both teams should be given an opportunity to possess the ball. However, another franchise in the form of Tennessee Titans countered this by saying that both teams should have the opportunity to possess the ball unless the first team scores a touchdown and makes a two-point conversion.

When asked about the controversy regarding the Over time rules, Mike Tomlin claimed himself to be an advocate for the sudden death framework. He urged that he’s quite a traditionalist in these matters.

“To be quite honest with you, I’m a sudden-death advocate,” Mike Tomlin said according to ESPN. “I’m a traditionalist. I don’t fear sudden death and I never have, but obviously I lost that battle a decade ago. But my position remains unchanged.

Mike Tomlin also claimed that the sudden death rule is also fair for both teams in the sense that they’ve had an opportunity to win it in the 60 minutes and now they’ll have to fight it out.

“I am one of the few sudden-death advocates I would imagine. I just think 60 minutes everybody has had a fair opportunity to win the game. When you’re talking about changes as it pertains to competitive fairness, I speak to the first 60 minutes that we all had. So, win the game. I don’t fear sudden death,” finished off Mike Tomlin.
