New York Jets owner Woody Johnson close ally of Donald Trump ‘dead set’ on buying Chelsea FC from Roman Abramovich
Woody Johnson and Roman Abramovich
Due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, countries all over the world have imposed sanctions on Russian oligarchs and freezer the assets of the Russian government in an attempt to stop Russia’s heinous acts.
Owing to impeding sanctions, Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, owner of Chelsea F.C. of the Premier League is in a hurry to sell his club. NFL’s New York Jets owner, Woody Johnson, is preparing a bid to buy the Blues as per reports.
Woody Johnson fell in love with the Blues during his stay in London
Woody Johnson is the heir to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical company, has reportedly already spoken to Raine Group, who is organizing the bidding process. Johnson developed an interest in the Premier League during his stay in London as the United States ambassador to the United Kingdom under Donald Trump.
Johnson would become the fourth NFL owner in the English top-flight, after Arsenal’s Stan Kroenke, the Glazer family at Manchester United, and Jed York, who has a minority share in Leeds. Under Woody’s ownership, the Jets have seen continuous signs of decline. The Jets won their only Super Bowl way back in 1968 before Johnson’s owned the organization.
Although the financial value of the Jets has risen dramatically, from around £500million when purchased to around £2.4billion now, that will be little consolation to fans, who have seen the team decline dramatically from a sporting standpoint. Chelsea fans will hope he fares better with their club if his purchase proves successful.
Roman Abramovich under pressure to sell all his assets in UK due to impeding sanctions on Russian oligarchs
Abramovich shocked the entire football world when he announced he’s looking to sell the Blues and end his 2-decade long rein at Stamford Bridge. The Russian oligarch reportedly wants £3billion in exchange for ownership of Chelsea FC. The reason Abramovich is in a hurry to unload one of his biggest assets — Foreign Secretary Liz Truss declared that the Government’s Economic Crime (Transparency and Enforcement) Bill – reinforced with new measures designed to strengthen the UK’s sanctions regime against wealthy Russians.
If Woody Johnson is successful in buying the Blues, he should work on the team way better than he did with the Jets, which are considered to be one the worst teams in the NFL. One look at the Jets’ NFL record and Chelsea fans should be terrified. Let’s hope Johnson has better luck in Premier League and doesn’t destroy another great organization!
