Kadarius Toney hasn’t had much to cheer about in his second year with the Kansas City Chiefs. He hasn’t sniffed a starting spot on the roster, dropping out of favor. But on Saturday, he received some much-needed good news: the birth of his daughter.
Toney has been a controversial figure in the short period he has been part of the NFL. The Chiefs thought they could turn him into the next Tyreek Hill, but that’s easier said than done. His previous employer, the New York Giants, understood that memo just one and a half years after they drafted the 25-year-old.
He has only played one game since lining up offside on the memorable catch-and-lateral from tight end Travis Kelce. A move that should have won one Chiefs game if he had kept his eyes on the ball. This was followed by the infamous dropped catch against the New England Patriots in Week 15.
Football fans on social media had some interesting takes on Kadarius Toney missing out on the AFC Championship game
The Patriots game was the last time he stepped onto the field wearing the Chiefs jersey. Toney missed the last six games, but his latest exclusion from the squad has the alarm bells ringing.
On Saturday, the Chiefs announced that they were downgrading the former Gator from questionable with a hip injury to out against the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship.
However, there was another reason he would not travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens. Toney will be staying back in Kansas to stay by the side of his baby mama, Charnesia Lumpkin. That’s very considerate of the Chiefs organization to allow him the leave. But that didn’t save him from the online trolls, who are always on the hunt for any kind of slip-up.
Kadarius Toney has a contract that will end after the 2024 season. The Chiefs have the option to activate his 5-year option. But judging by his performances, it would surprise many if he stayed in Kansas City beyond the current postseason.
It’s not like they haven’t tried to give him the push he deserves. Even after the horrible drop catches, quarterback Patrick Mahomes refused to blame his receiver but rather added that he should have been better at throwing the ball.
During the 2023 season, Toney only participated in 26 percent of the total offensive snaps in the games he has played. In that time, he caught the ball 27 times for 169 yards with an average of 6.3 yards per reception.
