It’s always a tense affair when football teams go head-to-head, even if it’s preseason. During match days, passion can be felt oozing out from all corners of the stadium as fans cheer for their favorite team at the top of their voices. However, things got a little too heated during the Denver Broncos vs. San Francisco 49ers game on Saturday night.
Fights among supporters are nothing new in the NFL, especially when two rival teams are playing each other. Over the years, Levi Stadium has seen some memorable skirmishes. Who can forget the epic night in November 2018 when the Raiders came to the Bay Area?
At least 32 people were arrested that day, along with several detained for instigating violence due to intoxication. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, who has seen a lot of similar incidents in his time, claimed it was nothing out of the ordinary.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been to a sporting event in my life where there hasn’t been a fight,” he told the reporters. “I do think that’s somewhat normal.”
So last night’s brawl in the stands probably won’t bother him that much. A short clip of what transpired yesterday was shared on Twitter. However, it is unclear why the fight broke out in the first place. But it turned into quite a scuffle. The situation cooled down a bit when one of the participants started bleeding from his mouth.
49ers fought till the last kick of the game against the Broncos
While the fans fought in the stands, their favorite players did the same on the field. Both quarterbacks, Brock Purdy, and Russell Wilson, played well.
Purdy started his first game since picking up an injury last season against the Eagles in the NFC title game. Thus, he did not feature in the 49ers’ first preseason game against the Raiders.
The 23-year-old looked satisfactory, throwing mostly short passes. He recorded four pass completions out of five attempts for 65 yards. Purdy threw two accurate passes to Deebo Samuel and had to settle for a field goal.
Heavily scrutinized Trey Lance got another chance to prove himself. He threw an early interception but came back strong to throw a 22-yard TD pass to Cameron Latu along with two big passes to Ronnie Bell.
However, rookie Jake Moody won the game. The Broncos were in pole position to win the game with just a minute left on the clock. Lance’s last pass went through Bell, which set up Moody to hit a field goal in the last three seconds.
The game finished 23-21 in favor of the San Francisco 49ers on the day. But both teams can take several positives from the game. Shanahan and Co. will face the Los Angeles Chargers next on August 26.
