On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs, led by their star quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, secured a victory over the San Francisco 49ers in their Super Bowl matchup. Following the Niners’ loss, NFL fans started pointing out a crucial play where the 49ers failed to block Chris Jones. Fans believe that play costed the game for the San Francisco-based football team.
During the overtime, the scores were tied at 19 points each, and the 49ers were facing a crucial 3rd down and 4 in the red zone. Brock Purdy, who took the snap from the shotgun position, immediately felt the pressure from an unblocked Chris Jones and had to throw away the ball to avoid getting sacked.

During the play, Chris Jones, the star defensive lineman, was left untouched, and that eventually led to Purdy throwing the ball despite having Brandon Aiyuk wide open on the other side. Purdy just didn’t have enough time to turn his body around and throw a pass to wide-open Aiyuk with Jones getting on his face.
The short video of that 3rd down play went viral on social media and accumulated more than 2.1 million views within just days of posting. Fans on social media couldn’t believe the 49ers left Chris Jones unblocked during such a crucial moment of the game. Check out the footage attached below.
Nonetheless, after the failed 3rd downplay, the 49ers had to settle for a field goal. And then, the Chiefs managed to march 75 yards and scored a game-winning touchdown on the next drive.
