Jimmy Garoppolo remains a 49er after a long offseason where the San Francisco 49ers were actively trying to get him out of the Bay area as they begin a new era with Trey Lance, who’s entering his sophomore season in the league after being drafted no.3 overall in last years draft. There have been many speculations about why the 49ers couldn’t find a suitor for Jimmy Garoppolo.
From the 49ers asking for a lofty price to teams not willing to pay $25 million for a Quarterback of Garoppolo’s calibre and the surgery, he underwent earlier this year have all been blamed for teams being discouraged from trading for him. Garoppolo is an out-of-favour talented QB who just a few years ago led the 49ers to the Super Bowl where they suffered defeat at the hand of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Garoppolo still being on the 49ers was quite a surprise to 49ers GM John Lynch who recently talked about Garoppolo and his team’s decision to sign the quarterback on a restructured deal.

After waiting for almost the entire off-season for a suitable offer the 49ers top brass decided to restructure Garoppolo’s contract to make it more trade-friendly which many believe might happen if any quarterback around the league succumbs to injuries during the first few weeks and their team needs a solid replacement. The 49ers might be banking on that.
There was some serious interest in Jimmy Garoppolo per 49ers General Manager John Lynch who blames the surgery for the breakdown in negotiations- “What I can tell you with great confidence is combine time, there were really serious talks. When I say serious, probably two, three teams that I felt like — you’d have to ask them — this was going to happen. And that’s when that news (of the surgery) broke. Then things went where they went.“
Although the team might have needed to smooth things over with Lance who was announced as the starting Quarterback for the 49ers which was not much of a task per Lynch- “The lesser a contract is, the more enticing you always are at every single position to every team. When I told Trey that Jimmy’s going to come back, he’s like, ‘Awesome. That dude was awesome for me last year. I can’t wait to be the same way.“
The new deal has made Garoppolo the highest-paid backup Quarterback in the league and there is an argument to be made that he’s the best backup Quarterback in the league.
