Was Brock Purdy ever in danger of losing his quarterback role to Tom Brady? San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch finally made things clear about what actually happened.
While appearing on the Eye Test for Two podcast with Clark Judge and Ira Kaufman, Lynch revealed that when Purdy got hurt during the 2022 season, the 49ers were concerned about a shortage. As a result, head coach Kyle Shanahan planned on pursuing Brady.
[Kyle] and Purdy have a lot of conversations, and you have to understand, I think, the context. Brock got hurt in the NFC Championship game, as everyone knows, and his elbow was really not in a good spot,.Lynch told Judge and Kaufman
During the 2022 NFC Championship game, Purdy hurt his elbow on his throwing hand. Philadelphia Eagles Haason Reddick’s tackle left the 24-year-old unable to continue, and the 49ers lost the game. Purdy underwent surgery, and there was doubt whether he would be ready enough to be the starter in 2023.
However, his recovery speed left Lynch surprised.
To look back now, unbelievably, almost a miraculous recovery. He beat the timeline and all that.
Could Brady have become the 49ers quarterback instead of Purdy?
Purdy’s injury wouldn’t have bugged Shanahan if the remaining quarterbacks were healthy, which wasn’t the case. Jimmy Garappolo was suffering from a foot injury, and Trey Lance had a bad ankle sprain.
When it first happened, we’re really searching. Trey [Lance] had been hurt as well. He kind of sustained a [vicious] ankle injury, and that didn’t look really good. So we had to look at all our options.Lynch said
So at one point, the 49ers realized they needed a helping hand because they were without a healthy quarterback. As a last resort, Shanahan threw in Brady’s name, but he made it sound hypothetical.
At some point, he said, ‘Look, I guess the one way you’re not a starter if you’re healthy is if we go get someone like Brady.’ And I presume that’s what happened.Lynch told as per 49erswebzone.com
Purdy, on the other hand, figured if he did not make it in time, the 49ers would add Brady to replace him. He failed to realize that Shanahan’s idea was only for precaution. While Brady did not address the rumor, hopefully, Shanahan will also shed some light very soon.
