On Sunday night, Kyle Shanahan‘s San Francisco 49ers were fired up to take on the Philadelphia Eagles, but they were unprepared to witness Dre Greenlaw and Eagles head of security, Dom DiSandro, get ejected. It didn’t really affect the game, which ended with the Bay Area team winning handily, 42-19.
There have been some out-of-the-box incidents taking place on the football field, from outrageous celebrations to players flopping onto the ground. Greenlaw’s ejection is certainly up there with one of the most unusual sending-offs in the modern-day NFL.
When questioned about his opinion on the ejection incident after the game, Coach Shanahan said,
I just can't believe someone uninvolved in a football game can taunt our players like that and put their hands in our guy's face. From what I was told, Dre did it back to him, and I was told that he mashed him in the face a little bit, so he got ejected. It was a very frustrating play. I got to watch it to have a true opinion on it.
Kyle Shanahan has no hard feelings toward DiSandro
A day later, while the dust settled and the hot heads started to cool down a bit, Shanahan wished that hopefully, DiSandro wouldn’t receive any major punishment. According to him, the incident was the result of the tension that the 49ers and Eagles generated.
I think he got caught in a weird situation—an emotional situation. Definitely don’t have any hard feelings toward Dom or anything like that. I don’t want anyone to go too hard on him.Shanahan said in 49ers talk with Matt Maiocco podcast
He revealed talking to a few people in the 49ers who knew DiSandro from coaching or playing in Philadelphia. Dom has been with the Eagles since 1999. He has also served as an assistant to general manager Howie Roseman.
I don’t know him personally, and I don’t think it was that big of a deal. Sometimes you’re in areas you shouldn’t be in. I was just upset our player got ejected over something and got kicked out of a big game.
He added that things like what happened with Greenlaw and DiSandro happen from time to time, and everyone stands aside and moves on. According to NBC Sports Bay Area, 49ers general manager John Lynch had a chat with DiSandro after the game, and the conversation ended on a good note.
