It’s official now: The San Francisco 49ers have solved their defensive problem by promoting assistant Nick Sorensen to defensive coordinator. But with that, they have hired former Los Angeles Chargers coach Brandon Staley as the team’s staff member and fans aren’t happy at all. 

A source close to ESPN reporter Adam Schefter broke the hiring news, but the franchise is yet to officially announce the news. After the tragic loss at the Super Bowl LVIII against the Kansas City Chiefs earlier last month, the first action taken by the franchise was firing defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.

Staley’s exact role hasn’t been disclosed yet, though it may likely be the new assistant coach on head coach Kyle Shanahan’s coaching staff. 

After a successful year with the Los Angeles Rams in 2020, Staley became a potential head coach candidate in the offseason, which landed him a head coach job with the Chargers in 2021. Unfortunately for him, he couldn’t lead as a head coach as well as he did as the defensive coordinator. 

During his tenure with the Chargers, he was called out multiple times for his in-game decisions like time management, going after fourth down, and others. After a 24-24 record, the franchise fired him in mid-December following a disastrous 63-21 loss against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Getting hired by the Niners has come off as a second chance for the 41-year-old, giving him an opportunity to regenerate his NFL coaching career after the backlash he faced at the Chargers. However, fans don’t think so.

The Niners’ fans were already angry at the head coach Shanahan for his blunder in the Super Bowl for forgetting the OT rules that cost the trophy. And now, the franchise hired a coach whose reputation is for making such blunders. “More big game chokers to help Shanahan forget the OT rules,” wrote one fan, while another wrote, “Staley?? Some fans even expressed disbelief over the Niners’ decision to let go of former defensive coordinator Wilks. It remains to be seen how things unfold.
