Christian McCaffrey‘s 17-game scoring run finally came to an end on Sunday night. When he showed up for the post-game press conference, he appeared to be tense and possibly expecting the stat would come up at some point during the conversation.

Judging by how McCaffrey began, it seemed he had an answer ready—just waiting for a reporter to pop the question. But they were not expecting such a reply.

I suck. Everyone else on the team scored. Except me.

He said and the entire room filled with laughter. Losing the streak was a disappointing moment for him, but the 49ers beat an excellent Jacksonville Jaguars team 34-3. So he had earned the right to joke about it.

It wasn’t just a blowout, but rather a much-needed win after losing three straight games. So the victory was much more about relief and the release of their pent-up frustration. Still, they tried to get McCaffrey the 18th rushing touchdown, which would have broken the record set by Lenny Moore.

Kyle Shanahan saw his team extend their lead to 34-3 early in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Brock Purdy found veteran fullback Kyle Juszczyk wide-open in the Jaguars’ end zone. Shanahan then decided to take most of his regulars off, which included McCaffrey.

Sam Darnold replaced Purdy to take his first few snaps of the season. However, when they reached the 5-yard mark in the Jags’ red zone, Shanahan sent McCaffrey back out on the field so that he could break the rushing touchdown record.

Darnold went for it in 4 and 1 looking for the 27-year-old, but the pass was incomplete. The San Francisco 49ers then took off the former Panthers man, fearing a potential injury.

18 games in a row is a big record. If we had a chance to do that, I was going to try to do it for him. I think that was a pretty big accomplishment.

It’s hard to score touchdowns in one game, let alone in 17 straight games. McCaffrey ended the game with 16 carries for 95 yards. The win leaves the 49ers with a 6-3 record, but this one would feel sweeter.

It wasn't perfect, but we just stayed with it. We kept going and going. The defense came up well with a bunch of turnovers. Offensively, we can still get better, which is exciting, so I think we learned our lesson these last three weeks.

Purdy finally managed to stop throwing picks in this game. He capped the night with 19 completions for 296 yards and three touchdowns. Next, the 49ers will welcome the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Levi’s Stadium.
