After failing to get the Super Bowl trophy last year, the San Francisco 49ers aren’t ready to leave any loose ends for the next team. They made their biggest offseason move this week by drafting the former Minnesota Vikings quarterback, Josh Dobbs. 

Joshua Dobbs’ agent, Mike McCartney made the big announcement this Monday about the quarterback signing a one-year contract deal with the 49ers, on X, congratulating Dobbs. A source close to ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the news and also shared the details of his contract, which is worth $2.25 million, including $750K in play-time incentives.

There’s no doubt that the 49ers wouldn’t even consider benching Brock Purdy, as the young quarterback has proved his capability in the two seasons he played as a starter, especially last season when he led the team straight to the Super Bowl. This means Dobbs will most likely take over Sam Darnold’s job as backup quarterback.

In 2023, Dobbs became a brief internet sensation, when it was found that he had a background in aerospace engineering major at Tennessee and also interned at NASA, where he was nicknamed “Passtronaut.” It was revealed shortly after his name flashed the headlines for leading the Vikings to a 31-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons– replacing starter Jaren Hall. 

However, soon after that, he lost the spark and got benched in the fourth quarter of Minnesota’s 3-0 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders in week 14. After being benched by head coach Kevin O’Connell, Dobbs didn’t play again. 

Fans react to 49ers signing Josh Dobbs as a backup to Brock Purdy

Since getting drafted in the fourth-round pick in 2017, quarterback Dobbs logged throwing for 2,920 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Having him on the team, the Niners’ fans seem to be on cloud nine, as they celebrated all over the internet.

One fan wrote on X, “SF might have finally found a starter,” while another wrote, “Good signing. He’s a solid backup who can win ya some games.” Here are some of the reactions:

Some fans even argued that Dobbs might be even better than starting quarterback Purdy. While other believe, that if in case Purdy misses any games, Dobbs would be the solid backup. It’s truly a moment of joy for the fans, who called this signing ‘smart’ and Dobbs a ‘legend.’ It is to be seen if Dobbs lives up to the expectations.
