The quarterback battle in the San Francisco 49ers camp between Brock Purdy and Trey Lance was one of the biggest storylines in the 2023 off-season. That battle is now officially ended and an injured Purdy has come out victorious in it. As a result, just a few days ago, the Niners made Lance their third-string QB behind Purdy and Sam Darnold. And now, the Dallas Cowboys have made a shocking move to acquire Lance in a trade which has fans questioning Dak Prescott‘s future as their starting QB.

The 49ers traded Trey Lance to the Cowboys in exchange for a 2024 4th-round draft pick according to multiple reports. This move came after Lance failed to prove himself in the 2023 off-season in the Niners camp. Lance was set to be the starting QB of the Niners in their final preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Friday, but now he will be off to Dallas in hopes of reviving his career.

He will likely be the backup QB of Dak Prescott in Dallas in the upcoming NFL season. That is, if he can beat Cooper Rush for that job. Back in 2021, the 49ers made a big move to trade up to draft Trey Lance in the draft. They gave up multiple picks, including 3 first-rounders to move up nine spots in the draft to acquire the North Dakota St. product.

But their calculated move hasn’t worked out. Following the trade, the 49ers GM John Lynch said that they took a shot at Lance and it didn’t work out in the end. “Really hard day, such a wonderful young man. We took a shot and it didn’t work out, we own that. We take accountability for it,” Lynch said in the team’s broadcast on Friday according to The Post.

NFL fans on social media started trolling Dak Prescott after the Cowboys acquired Trey Lance in a shocking trade with the San Francisco-based football team. Fans believe this year could be the final chance for Prescott following the Lance trade. Check out some of the reactions below.

Lance has been in the trade block for quite some time now and the Cowboys finally stepped in and acquired Lance. The Dallas-based football team will pay the former third overall pick $950k in 2023 and $5.3 million in 2024. Besides, they could pick Lance’s 5th-year option after the 2023 season. Lance will likely start as the third string QB in Dallas’ depth chart.
