College Football is going to expand onto a bigger stage by increasing the number of teams that get selected for the playoffs. The CFP board has decided to increase the number of teams from 4 to 12. The new guidelines indicate that, the top 6 teams will automatically enter the playoffs whereas the highest ranked 6 teams after them will also get a chance for the playoffs.

This increases the scale of college football to a massive level. the new guidelines can also be implemented as soon as 2024 if not 2026. Before college football brought in $600 million for the CFP but with the implementation of the new expansion the board can earn up to $1.2 billion annually.

The College Football board have also started to sell their rights to ESPN, Fox, CBS and NBC to air its games. This is the most ambitious expansion college football has ever tried.

“This is an historic and exciting day for college football,” said Mark Keenum, chairman of the CFP Board of Managers chairman. “More teams, more participation and more excitement are good for our fans, alumni, and student-athletes.

“I’m grateful to my colleagues on the board for their thoughtful approach to this issue and for their resolve to get expansion across the goal line and for the extensive work of the Management Committee that made this decision possible.”
