Aaron Donald nearly gave the NFL world a heart attack on Sunday. The Super Bowl LVI champion briefly changed his bio, indicating he was a “former” lineman, suggesting his retirement from football.

Donald changed his bio on Twitter that read: “Former Pitt Football Player #97 former NFL D linemen for the Rams #99.” He did later drop “former” from his bio. But those few minutes between those changes were enough for fans to lose their minds.

Everyone wondered if this was it for one of the greatest defensive players of all time. The Rams, unfortunately, couldn’t “run it back” and had a horrific season for the defending World Champs as they went 5-12.

Is Aaron Donald retiring?

Donald was selected 13th overall by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2014 NFL draft. He quickly rose to fame after recording 48 tackles in his rookie season, which earned him the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Donald never had a drop in his production, which made him the most feared pass rusher in the league. During his nine-year stint in the league, the 31-year-old has had a long list of records and awards to his name.

Donald first talked about retirement before Super Bowl LVI. He had said that he would probably retire if the Rams won the Lombardi Trophy. Los Angeles won the World Championship and Donald returned as well. Last year in June, the Rams announced that they renegotiated Donald’s 2018 contract extension. The new deal added $40 million to the last three years of the original six-year extension, making Donald the only other non-quarterback to earn more than $30 million per year.

So, naturally, fans were scared that Aaron Donald had put up a cryptic message on Twitter hinting at retirement.

Maybe it was just a typing mistake, or maybe it was an inkling of the future. Only Aaron Donald can give clarification and he has yet to address the issue. Let’s see what he has to say if he decides to talk.
