During his 18-year-long career, Aaron Rodgers has played under several coaches. With some of them, he has developed very close relationships; enough to speak on equal terms. So when the Jets held their joint training session with the Carolina Panthers, he could not hold himself back from catching up with old friend James Campen.
In the latest episode of HBO’s Hard Knocks, Rodgers can be seen joking with Campen during practice. As Liev Schreiber narrates, the 39-year-old sneaks up on the Panthers’ offensive line coach. What followed next can only be described as two close friends indulging in banter, rather than the two opposing team members talking.
“What’s up, little bi**h?,” Rodgers taunted. “What are you doing, huh? You look fat as s**t.” He continued,” You said 260 [pounds].” Campen replied, “No, I did not.” It kept on going to and fro until Rodgers asked, “Where you at?,” to which Campen responded, “Five over.”
The conversation sounded like the veteran quarterback was referring to Campen’s body. Rodgers has been well acquainted with the Panthers’ coach since their time at the Green Bay Packers. Naturally, he knows a thing or two about Campen.
This took place before the New York Jets faced their Carolina counterpart in a pre-season friendly last week. Zach Wilson started once more as they demolished the Panthers 27-0.
Aaron Rodgers says the New York Jets offensive line is a work in progress
The Jets pulled off the biggest signing of the offseason by adding Aaron Rodgers to their roster. Moreover, they managed to strengthen their already-stacked running back spot with Dalvin Cook. However, the only flaw on his team is the offensive line.
Against the Carolina Panthers, it was clear that players were able to hunt down Zach Wilson quickly several times. In Hard Knocks episode 2, head coach Robert Saleh tore into his offensive line.
As per ProFootball Talk‘s Josh Alper, Saleh said,” Offense, it was our first fuc**g opportunity to change the stink.” Then he emphasizes that even a Super Bowl-winning quarterback will have difficulty creating plays if the guys at the front don’t protect him better.
“You can have a Hall of Fame quarterback,” Saleh continued. “You can have two $10 million-plus receivers. [But] none of it matters until the big boys up front change.”
Rodgers backed up the OLs after the Panthers games. “Thought we played a lot better up front today,” the Pro Bowler said. “We just need some continuity so guys can feel comfortable playing together.”
The New York Jets offensive line includes the likes of Duane Brown, Laken Tomlinson, Connor McGovern, and Alijah Vera-Tucker. They will face their next challenge against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on August 20.
