Look like Adrian Peterson hasn’t officially retired from the National Football League, not yet. The last time when fans got a look at him on the football field was Week 13 of the 2021 regular season as a member of the Seattle Seahawks.
Ever since then, he had been looking inside the NFL as an outsider and sat out the entire 2022 season. All these indicate his potential retirement from the NFL anytime soon or already happened. But that’s not the whole story.
The former NFL MVP recently addressed his sudden absence from football for such a prolonged period, which raised tons of speculations about his retirement. Peterson shut down all retirement rumors stating he hasn’t officially retired, not will be retiring anytime soon. In fact, he revealed he’s rather interested in getting another opportunity to play as he isn’t done just yet.
In a recent conversation with CBS Sports’ Danny Kanell, the running back was asked whether he’s retired or not. He replied:
I wouldn’t say I am game-ready right now. But I had to let my body recover. You know I had some injuries and stuff. My last injury was with Seattle, I had a pinched nerve so I didn’t want to go on under knee so it took about a year for that to finally heal.Adrian Peterson said
He added:
I’m always open to get out there and play again. We’ll see what happens.Adrian Peterson added
Although the veteran running back is positive to make a return, the chances are quite slim for him to get out there again.
Why Adrian Peterson’s NFL comeback is highly unlikely
Peterson’s journey in the NFL hasn’t been the smoothest one out there, making his return more unlikely. First, he hasn’t played since 2021 and the last season he logged 1,000 receiving yards was back in 2018, when he was with the Washington Commanders.
In addition to that, there is an age factor as the running back will be turning 39 in the coming March— an age near which many athletes start considering retirement. Also, how the offense used to be in Peterson’s prime is way different than how it is now.
And most importantly, the need for workhorse, bell-cow running backs isn’t as much as it used to be in the league, and as Peterson excelled in that, it also compromises his return scenarios.
