Kansas City Chiefs once again headed their way to the Super Bowl LVIII, as they are set to face Baltimore Ravens in the AFC championship and for the first time in six years, they will not host it at Arrowhead Stadium.

Having an 8-12 all-time playoff record on the road, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs would need to pull off a strong victory against the top-seeded Baltimore Ravens, to make their second consecutive Super Bowl appearance. 

As the top-seeded team in the AFC, the Ravens entered the playoffs with a bye-week advantage and established their first triumph in the divisional round against the Houston Texans. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are coming off two consecutive victories in the playoffs, against Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills. 

However, the Chiefs’ journey to the AFC championship hasn’t been as flat as a pancake given their 11-6 regular season standing.

Though they successfully occupied a playoff berth but had to settle for the AFC’s No. 3 seed. While their counterpart, the Ravens recorded the conference’s best 13-4 record. 

This season, the Ravens built a strong offensive as well as defensive force that dominated the entire conference and the franchise ended its 12-year drought as they advanced to the AFC champion. Interestingly, this is the first face-off between two of the leading quarterbacks in the league: Lamar Jackson and Mahomes. 

Where the Ravens looked like the best team across the league, the reigning Super Bowl struggled to keep up a strong face. And for them to reach their goal, Kansas City would need to enhance their efficiency.

Thuney started every game of the Chiefs this season and played every single snap, except week 18, when he was given one-game rest ahead of the playoffs. In his absence, backup guard Nick Allegretti is likely to replace the All-Pro guard. 

The Ravens, on the other hand, are likely to be without Marlon Humphrey, who is still recovering from his calf injury that he suffered late in the season. He also missed out on their first playoff game against the Texans. The former Pro Bowl corner is known to be one of the best defensive players in the league and is likely to line up against Chiefs’ star tight end Travis Kelce or rookie Rashee Rice.

In the regular season, the Baltimore Ravens have the top rushing offense as they averaged 156.5 yards per game.

They are ranked first in the opponent offensive allowed, second in defensive EPA per play as well as dropback EPA per play. With a percentage of 51.01%, the Ravens have called the highest number of run plays in the game. While their counterpart’s run defense is ranked 30th in rush EPA per play. 

In the divisional round against the Texans, the Ravens’ star QB Jackson rushed 11 times for 100 yards along with a couple of touchdowns. In his five-year career postseason contest, this was his third 100-yard rushing performance.

Apart from him, Justice Hill recorded 66 yards on 13 carries, and Gus Edwards rushed for 10 times for 40 yards.
