Kirk Cousins is the starting QB for the Minnesota Vikings and had a decent run this year in the NFL. However, his contract is going to expire by 2023 and there are lot of debate making rounds on social media regarding the same.
Cousins signed a three-year, fully guaranteed contract with the Vikings in 2018 worth $84 million, making him the highest-paid player in NFL history at the time. In 2020, Cousins signed another contract for two-year extension, which will expire in 2023. The extension is worth $66 million, with $61 million fully guaranteed at signing. The deal included a $30 million signing bonus and a base salary of $21 million per year.
With many arguments going around on social media, one writer from the Athletic believes that the Vikings should give him a contract extension as it’s in their best interest to do so.
The Athletic’s Alec Lewis believes extending Cousins contract is a must and the management should make it their top priority as they’ll save lots of money on this deal while developing a new young QB.
“Minnesota could restructure his deal to save money on the cap this year, but that would increase the amount of dead money they’d owe in the future,” Lewis wrote via the Athletic. “So, similar to last season, an extension feels like the best approach, especially considering the Vikings do not have another quarterback waiting in the wings.”

Kirk Cousins contract situation has divided social media
The Vikings QB has been the starting QB for his team for several years now and has often played exceptionally well. However, Kirk Cousins lacks consistency and that has faltered the Vikings’ playoffs hope for many seasons now.
Many on social media believe Cousins is overall an average QB who can get the work done from time to time. Nonetheless, if the Vikings want to win silverware, then they will have to invest in a young quality QB who can be with them for years to come.
Alec Lewis’ advice is favorable as a one or two-year contract extension can help ease the burden of the salary cap on the Minnesota based franchise. The Vikings can also develop a young QB throughout that time under the mentorship of the 34-year-old QB.
Kirk Cousins’ future is uncertain now. However, there is always hope for him as he will make a decent addition to any team in the NFL who need a quality QB.
