The Carolina Panthers signed free agent quarterback Andy Dalton in the 2023 off-season before adding the highly-touted QB Bryce Young in the NFL Draft that concluded in June. Dalton is expected to back up and be a mentor to the rookie QB Young but he believes that he could still be a starting signal-caller in the league.
In a recent interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the veteran QB channeled his inner Cam Newton and said, “I view myself as a starter in this league; I don’t think there are 32 guys better than me.” However, he also said that he understands the situation he’s currently in, i.e., being a backup to the 2023 1st overall pick QB Bryce Young in Carolina.
“This is the situation I am in, and I understand that,” said Dalton. “As soon as I don’t think I’m one of the best 32, or a little lower, I’ll be watching football on TV.”
The veteran QB, who’ll be turning 36 in October, has statistics to back up his claim. Dalton, who started 14 games for the New Orleans Saints last year had a better passer rating (95.2) than the top-tier quarterbacks such as Dak Prescott (91.1), Aaron Rodgers (91.1), Tom Brady (90.7), and Justin Herbert (93.2).
The 3-time Pro Bowl QB Dalton threw for 2871 yards and 18 touchdowns while completing a career-high 66.7 percent of his pass attempts. Dalton proved last year that he still can play at a high level but age is not on his side. He will eventually be backup to the Panthers’ new QB Bryce Young, who’s looking to turn the franchise back to winning ways.

Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott face similar challenges in 2023
The New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers and the Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott are both looking to lead their franchises’ to a Super Bowl victory in 2023 and they both face similar challenges.
Sports media in New York and Dallas are ready to rip apart both quarterbacks if their teams failed miserably in the postseason. Even though they have good teams, getting into the playoffs could be a struggle since they share a division with a bunch of contenders.
Rodgers and the Jets would have to beat out the Super Bowl contenders Buffalo Bills to win the AFC East division. And, Prescott and the Cowboys would have to compete with the defending NFC Champions Philadelphia Eagles to clinch the NFC East division. In brief, it’s Super Bowl or bust for both the talented signal-callers.
