After re-signing L’Jarius Sneed and the linebacker Drue Tranquill, the Kansas City Chiefs are eagerly working on extending Chris Jones. The Chiefs’ star defensive tackle is set to become a free agent once the new league year begins in a few days. He will be on the open market when the legal tampering period begins. With just days left for free agency, the uncertainties are booming regarding the future of the Jones.

Amid all the speculations, the Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid has opened up about re-signing their star defensive lineman. During his recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show,” the HC said that the Chiefs would love to have Jones back with their team.

Yeah, well, not a whole lot to share. We'd love to have him back. [general manager] Brett Veach and his gang are working through that. Chris Shea works with our cap and does the contracts. So they're all working through this thing. They've had great communication. So, we'll just see where it goes from here.

Just a few weeks ago, Jones made a cryptic tweet amid the contract extension saga. It depicted Jones lying on the ground, and the HC was on him with two hands on the chest of the DT. Jones shared it on Twitter with the caption ‘KC.’ It triggered the question of whether everything was correct in the team.

Reid was also asked about the cryptic tweet. Andy Reid vowed that he doesn’t know anything about the negotiations part, but he believes the tweet is a positive sign.

Well, that could be taken a couple of different ways. But I like the dot, dots. I'm hoping, Rich. I can't give you anything because I don't have a whole lot. I'm doing all these media things, so maybe something is going better than I think it is.

Chris Jones’ contract has always been an issue

Chris Jones’ position has not always been very smooth in the organization. Ahead of the 2023-24 season, his tussles with the Chiefs’ management came to light. The DT asked for a hike in contract, and the Chiefs were hesitant to provide him that.

As a result, he missed several during the first half of the Regular season and Reid was frustrated about the situation. However, the issue was solved and Jones came back to the gridiron. He played well and had a pivotal role in stopping other offenses. And now, the issue persists.

Nonetheless, the Chiefs have re-signed two of their best defenders, L’ Jarius Sneed and Drue Tranquill. Both defenders did well last season.

If they manage to re-sign Jones, then their defense setup will be ready for the upcoming season. Only time can tell whether Jones will remain with the Kansas City-based football team.
