Even the harshest Chiefs critics would agree that the franchise’s fortunes have taken a massive turn since Andy Reid‘s appointment. But they became a dominant force in the AFC after Patrick Mahomes‘s draft in 2017. The pair are now defending Super Bowl champions, their second title in three years. But their celebration hit a dent when the Lions came to their home and took all the points back on Thursday, spoiling their banner celebrations.
To many, the loss came as a surprise because Detroit is famous for being the minnows of the NFL. However, analysts such as Stephen A. Smith were ready for an upset. The veteran analyst had predicted that the Dan Campbell-led side could beat the Chiefs. More so after star tight end Travis Kelce was missing due to injury and defensive tackle Chirs Jones sat in the stands because of contract disputes.
Their absence was felt throughout the match. Wide receiver Kadarius Toney dropped several passes, one of which resulted in a pick 6. The defense looked okay, but at times they were getting outplayed by Lions quarterback Jared Goff and receiver Amon Ra St. Brown. Then there’s the scandalous play from offensive lineman Jawaan Taylor at the line of scrimmage.
However, everything could have been avoided if head coach Andy Reid made some bold changes, according to Barstool Sports. They pointed out that despite being 20-21 down, the “Chiefs had all three timeouts and the two-minute warning to still work with.”
Instead of taking chances, Andy Reid played defensively. They argued the Chiefs could have pushed Detroit back onto their side of the field. It would allow them enough time to use the timeouts, and a two-minute warning would provide ample time to get the ball back. Instead, they let the Lions have the ball and underutilized Patrick Mahomes’ abilities.

There was not all doom and gloom for Andy Reid. Backup tight end Blake Bell had a decent game, scoring their first touchdown. Despite his receivers having a horrible day, Patrick Mahomes finished with 226 yards passing and two touchdowns. The 27-year-old was also the leading rusher in the game, which says a lot about their offense. This proves that Andy Reid needs to fix a few things before their next match.
It’s possible that Andy Reid was missing his right-hand man, Eric Bienemy. The former offensive coordinator moved to the Washington Commanders in the offseason.
The Chiefs do have some problems. There’s still no confirmation as to when both Kelce and Jones will return. Till then, they have to hang on, and the rookies need to step up. Their next test will be against the Chicago Bears on September 25.
