The Kansas City Chiefs’ recent defeat to the Buffalo Bills last Sunday ended in controversial fashion. The Chiefs had a chance to take the lead late in the game and managed to score a fantastic touchdown on a lateral pass from Travis Kelce to Kadarius Toney. However, that touchdown was nullified after Toney was flagged for offensive offside. Naturally, that verdict angered a lot of players, especially the team’s quarterback Patrick Mahomes and their HC Andy Reid.
Mahomes was visibly upset after the game as he complained to Bills’ QB Josh Allen about the call during their postgame handshake. Both Mahomes and Reid voiced their displeasure during the postgame interviews as well. They both criticized the referees for the penalty. As a result of that, both the QB and the HC of the Chiefs were fined heavily for their comments.
Reid referred to the play and the penalty as “embarrassing” for the NFL. Reid said after the game:
Very disappointed that it ended the way it did. Normally, I never use any of this as an excuse, but normally I get a warning before something like that happens in a big game. A bit embarrassing in the National Football League for that to take place.Andy Reid after the game
Mahomes echoed his head coach’s sentiments as he said:
Lost for words, man. Regardless of if we win or lose, just for it to end with another game where we're talking about the refs, it's just not what we want for the NFL or for football.Patrick Mahomes echoed Andy Reid’s sentiments
According to Adam Schefter, Andy Reid has been fined $100k whereas Mahomes endured a fine of $50k for “public criticism of game officials.”
The Chiefs lost the game by 3 points as they have now slipped to 8-5 for the season. They have lost two games in a row and are in trouble to grab that number seed in the AFC. Their next game is against the New England Patriots and they will hope to get back on track with a win on Sunday.
Andy Reid still has faith in Kadarius Toney despite major mistake against the Bills
The Kansas City Chiefs had a glorious chance to win their game last Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. However, a costly mistake by WR Kadarius Toney saw them lose to the Bills by 3 points. That loss resulted in the Chiefs slipping to 8-5 for the season. However, Chiefs’ HC Andy Reid still has faith in his receiver going forward.
Reid said on Monday:
The thing I know is he makes plays. He makes plays when he has the ball in his hand and that's important. He's a young guy. He doesn't have ... a ton of experience, but I think he's getting better every week. I don't see that as being a negative. I look at the things that he produced on, too.
The Chiefs came into the season as favorites to defend their Super Bowl title. However, this has been a difficult season for Reid and his players. They have lost multiple winnable games due to a lack of execution by the offense. They will hope to rectify that before the postseason.
