The Indianapolis Colts‘ luck with the quarterback position hasn’t been great in recent years. They are about to add another chapter to their recent history of quarterback turnover. The Colts will start rookie QB Anthony Richardson in their first game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. This will make Richardson the seventh different Colts starting QB to start in week 1 in the last seven years.
The revolving door of quarterbacks in Indianapolis began with the departure of Peyton Manning in 2012, a legendary figure who had been the face of the franchise for over a decade. Manning’s departure left a void that seemed nearly impossible to fill, but the Colts have been on a quest to find his successor ever since. From Andrew Luck‘s promising career that was cut short due to injuries to the brief stints of Jacoby Brissett, Philip Rivers, and Carson Wentz, the Colts have consistently faced the daunting task of finding stability at the game’s most critical position.
This season, the spotlight is on Anthony Richardson, a young and promising talent who brings athleticism and potential to the quarterback position. The Colts are hoping that Richardson can provide the stability and consistency they have been searching for since Manning’s departure. However, with the recent history of quarterback turnover, the pressure is immense.
Richardson, a former Florida Gators standout and the first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, is known for his dual-threat abilities. He possesses the arm strength to make deep throws and the speed to escape pressure and make plays with his legs. His unique skill set has drawn comparisons to some of the league’s top quarterbacks, but the transition from college to the NFL is a significant challenge that many young quarterbacks face. It will be interesting to see how Richardson fares in his first official NFL start.
Michael Pittman Jr. Eager to Make Anthony Richardson’s Job Easier in Colts Offense
As the Indianapolis Colts prepare for a new NFL season, wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. is on a mission: to make life easier for rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson. With Richardson set to become the seventh different quarterback to start in Week 1 for the Colts in the last seven seasons, Pittman is determined to play a pivotal role in the young quarterback’s development.
“Just let him know, hey, send it my way, and if I don’t catch it, then no one’s gonna catch it,” Pittman said via the team’s website. “That gives him confidence to throw up those 50/50 balls — oh, maybe he is, maybe he isn’t. No, he’s just gonna throw it down there, make a play, and that’s just gonna build him up more. So, just letting him know that I’m that guy for him.”
Richardson was drafted in the first round of the 2023 NFL season. He was declared as the starter for this season, and he also played in all three of the Colts’ preseason games. He will need all the help he can get from his wide receivers, especially Pittman. The Colts begin their campaign against the Jacksonville Jaguars at the Lucas Oil Stadium.
