The Las Vegas Raiders did not have a good campaign last season as they fired their head coach Josh McDaniels in the middle of the season. However, their interim HC Antonio Pierce managed to impress fans, the Raiders management and the players by winning 5 of his 9 games, including one game against the eventual Super Bowl champions, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
And now, during a recent episode of TheRushwithMaxx podcast, Pierce explained how the Raiders defeated the Chiefs. Antonio Pierce claimed he used the ‘Bad Boys’ Detroit Pistons‘ way of stopping Michael Jordan to defeat Mahomes.
We’ve got the Jordan rules and we’ve got what I’m calling now, from now on as long as I’m here, the Patrick Mahomes rules.Antonio Pierce said
So, basically, the Raiders head coach told his defensive unit to be as physical as they can to contain the 2-time league MVP. Pierce showed his team how the Pistons used to bully Michael Jordan and asked them to do the same to Patrick Mahomes in their game.
You remember when Jordan was going through it with the Pistons, all those guys in the ’80s before he became Michael Jordan, Air Jordan, the Pistons used to whip his a**. Any time he came to the hole, elbows, feeling him, love taps. We’re in his head, mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, I’m touching you. So I showed my guys Jordan getting his a** whooped.Antonio Pierce said
Well, that plan worked out really well during their Chiefs-Raiders’ week 16 matchup. The Raiders defense contained the Chiefs offense to just 14 points and forced Mahomes to throw an interception. They ended up winning the game despite their quarterback Aidan O’Connell registering only 62 passing yards.
Pierce claims that as the blueprint to defeat Mahomes. Fans, on the other side, questioned Pierce’s coaching style.
Mike Florio believes Antonio Pierce might get into trouble over his tactics to stop Patrick Mahomes
Antonio Pierce’s tactics to stop Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have now become a hot topic among football fans. While many believe Pierce is just playing old school football, some others, including NBC’s Mike Florio, suggest the Raiders head coach might get into trouble with the NFL.
In his article, Mike Florio cited past instances where the NFL issued warnings to the team over their tactics to stop the other teams. And then, he added that since Mahomes is the most famous football player at this time, the league might not brush off Pierce’s comments.
Florio speculates the NFL might intervene and issue a warning to Pierce over the issue. The league would certainly try to avoid another Bountygate kind of situation.
