The Atlanta Falcons recently made the call to appoint Raheem Morris as their next head coach after firing Arthur Smith. This came as a shocking decision for fans of the franchise who had got their hopes up after the news broke out regarding Bill Belichick interviewing with the team.
In a recent post by the official Falcons page, owner Arthur Blank laid down the reasons for the team’s decision to not bring Bill Belichick on board despite interviewing him twice. He put an end to the notion that Bill Belichick demanded more control and defended him.
Bill Belichick never asked for, in our discussions, full control of personnel, or the building, or anything of that nature. He's very inclusive, very collaborative, he met Terry Fontenot, he checked out our people doing his own references...all of these things that were being produced by the media were totally not true.
Arthur Blank argued that Bill Belichick did things in the right manner and did not carry the pride of being one of the best coaches in NFL history along with him. He made sure to understand the functioning of the organization and had a sit-down with the team’s general manager while expressing an intent to work together for a better outcome. Blank’s statements go against the notion that has been making rounds in media circles.
Arthur Blank was impressed by Bill Belichick and the manner in which he carried himself
Since Bill Belichick was in control of the New England Patriots franchise for over two decades, the story has been that wherever he goes, he will expect to have full control over the roster decisions and other key staff decisions. This reason could also be why just one NFL team out of seven which required head coaches offered Belichick an opportunity to interview with them.
Ultimately, the team settled on Raheem Morris, who has had experience being the defensive coordinator for the LA Rams and has coached the Falcons on an interim basis for 11 games in 2020.
Blank justified the team’s decision by stating,
Bill was really focused and is focused on being a great head coach...We looked at all the candidates that we interviewed, all the time together, and we felt for a variety of reasons that the best choice for us at this point in our lives, the life of the franchise going forward, is Raheem Morris.

The team’s decision was surprising considering Bill Belichick’s stellar resume. There is virtually nothing he has not accomplished in the NFL and the cultural shift which he brings with him to an organization is what the Falcons desperately need. The team’s decision may have been owing to the reason that Morris would be less likely when compared to Belichick to bring a situation wherein he would be intruding into the GM’s domain of recruiting personnel.
