The back-to-back NFC South Champions Tampa Bay Buccaneers are expected to take a step back in the upcoming season as they lost their star quarterback Tom Brady to retirement in the off-season. Now, their former second-round draft pick Kyle Trask and free agency signing Baker Mayfield are battling for the QB1 spot in Tampa Bay and Baker is likely to win the competition. Amidst this situation, Mayfield got honest about expectations of him filling in the boots of the 7-time Super Bowl Champion.
“I’ve always been myself. That’s kind of why people either love or hate me. So I do it my own way. And I enjoy doing it. I have fun while I’m doing it. … I respect (Brady) completely, but I’m not going to ever try and be him. I’m not built like him. I don’t play like him. So just, yeah, try to be the best version of myself,” Mayfield told Mike Jones of The Athletic.
Mayfield acknowledged Brady as the greatest QB of all time, but he did not fail to point out that football is a team sport and that the Buccaneers still have a good squad to compete. Baker claimed that it takes “a lot more than just one person” to achieve success in this sport.
While it’s true that football is the greatest team sport of all, it still can’t be denied a team is just as good as its quarterback. And going from Tom Brady to Mayfield is a major step back for any team. Especially considering the fact, Mayfield has struggled a lot in the training camp with his new teammates.

Despite the initial reports about how Baker Mayfield is losing the QB battle in Tampa Bay with Kyle Trask, now the former 1st overall pick, Mayfield is set to replace Tom Brady as the Buccaneers’ starting QB per multiple reports.
It has been documented that Mayfield has been struggling a lot in the training camp and has been throwing a lot of interceptions. Besides, reports also suggested that Kyle Trask has been promising in the camp.
But it seems like the Bucs head coach Todd Bowles is going with the experience of Mayfield instead of the young Trask. The Bucs QB competition has seemingly come to an end as the team is looking to start Mayfield in their season opener against the Minnesota Vikings next month.
