This NFL season started impressively for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield. However, the team’s offense failed to perform adequately, leading to a 20-6 loss against the Detroit Lions in Week 6. The Lions improved to a 5-1 record following the win.
QB Mayfield threw for 206 yards on 19/37 passing, with an interception. The game turned out terribly for the Bucs, and the 28-year-old quarterback understood that very well. The Bucs had a bye week in Week 5 and hoped to continue their impressive run against the Lions. However, the team from Detroit stood tall in the end.
Through Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, Baker Mayfield said, “I sucked today. We sucked today. It was awful from the get-go. Can’t play like that. We didn’t start fast, we didn’t pick it up in the middle and we didn’t finish strong. We have to be better.” However, Mayfield praised the resolve shown by the defense and special teams. He continued, “We played good defense, the special teams an amazing job again and the offense we just need to pick our s–t up. It’s really no other way around it.”
Since his days at Oklahoma, Baker Mayfield has been known for having an immature attitude. However, how he took responsibility for his poor performance definitely showed some maturity, as he did not run away and hide. But there still is a long way to go, and hopefully, the Bucs, as well as Mayfield, would learn from their mistakes. The team still holds a position at the top of the NFC South, with 3-2.
Bucs’ Rushing Woes Continue in Loss to Lions
Logging only 49 yards on 16 carries and an average of 2.8 yards per rush, the Bucs were greatly disappointed in last Sunday’s game. The team already had the worst-per-rush record in the league while entering Week 6, and this loss against the Lions made it worse.

The Bucs failed to get even one rushing first down, and their longest run was for eight yards. This allowed the Lions to dominate time of possession. And they did this by taking control of the ball for 36:30, more than Tampa Bay’s 23:30.
Bucs coach Todd Bowles blamed the team loss on post-bye-week rust, saying, “I thought it was a hard-fought game.” He accepted that the team made many mistakes as they came off a bye week. But Mayfield made no excuses for his mistakes and accepted that he threw poorly, including what led to an interception. He also missed a good opportunity of two deep balls to rookie Trey Palmer.
