With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers still unclear about their current standing with quarterback Baker Mayfield, he ought to be among the hottest quarterbacks in the free agency market. The offseason is starting next week, and unless and until the Bucs come up with a long-term contract extension, he is going into free agency.

But before the fete begins, the young quarterback took some time off the football field and tried out his skills on a baseball bat. This Thursday, Mayfield made a special appearance at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa to enjoy his sweet time watching the spring training matchup between the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers

He was accompanied by Bucs offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs for the Thursday fun. Watching them play, Mayfield also took some batting practice with the team. Though he was the No. 1 overall pick at the 2019 NFL Draft, watching him doing batting practice, it appeared he sure had spent tons of hours on the diamond during high school.

The 28-year-old often enjoys playing baseball, which he refers to as his first love. Back when he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2019, he went down to the Milwaukee Brewers’ training camp and took some batting practices there.

Unfortunately, the team Mayfield and Wirfs went down to support and couldn’t score a victory as the Tigers won the match by 11-5. Nonetheless, it seems quite clear Mayfield isn’t ready to leave Tampa Bay at the moment.

The Patriots eyeing Baker Mayfield heading into the free agency

Although both Mayfield and the Bucs are interested in cooking up a satisfactory long-term deal, there might be a scenario where the deal doesn’t happen, and he goes ahead with free agency

In such a case scenario, one NFL team in need of a quality quarterback is the New England Patriots. It’s quite the irony, as after two dominating decades and six Super Bowl trophies, legend Tom Brady left the Patriots for the Bucs, and now Mayfield appears to be in the same position just swamped.

The scenario sits well as the Patriots do have a salary cap satisfactory to Mayfield, whereas the Bucs do not. And if the Bucs fail to come up with a deal, the Patriots wouldn’t be the only team eyeing Mayfield.
