After losing their superstar quarterback Tom Brady to retirement this offseason, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed free agent and former No.1 overall pick Baker Mayfield to a one-year deal. In a recent interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio, Mayfield shed light on his time in Tampa and was full of praise for his WR group.
”Chris (Godwin) is great by himself, unbelievable guy. Just does all the right things. Knows how to run routes, when on leverage do all those little things. Russell’s (Gage) coming along as well. We have a good young group,” Mayfield praised the young WR group as well as Chris Godwin and Russell Gage.
“And you get to Mike (Evans), Mike’s unlike anybody else I’ve ever seen, truly. He does things that people shouldn’t be able to do. People don’t realize he’s 6’5” and he can run. It’s impressive to watch,” he said about Mike Evans, a clear satisfaction about the receiving corp.
While the WR section of the Bucs might be a sorted department, the same cannot be said for Mayfield’s position. The QB1 position in Tampa is up for grabs and Baker Mayfield will be hoping to be in that position for Week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings on 10th September. He has struggled the past couple of years in multiple teams and will be hoping to cement his status as the team’s main signal caller this season with a talented WR group around him.
Mayfield spent his first four years in Cleveland Browns and was then traded to the Carolina Panthers last year. After a disappointing start to the season, Mayfield requested his release from the team. In December of last season, he was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Rams. He signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and is fighting for a starting job against their former second-round draft pick Kyle Trask.
Mike Evans will be looking forward for his 10th straight 1000-receiving yards season
Mike Evans is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. He has consistently been one of the most productive pass catchers since he entered the league. Going into the 2023 season, he will have a different quarterback throwing him the ball. Brady and Evans worked well for the three seasons they were together in Tampa, but now Brady is retired and, according to recent reports, it will be Baker Mayfield throwing him the football to start this season.
Evans already has nine consecutive seasons with more than 1000 yards receiving and he will be looking to make it ten straight. It will be challenging since the QB position is still up in the air and Evans will have to be in sync with the new quarterback.
Although Evans has the likes of Chris Godwin and Russell Gage to support him, he is still the WR1 in Tampa and he will have to be elite week after week if the Buccaneers have to make some noise in the NFC. If Evans can stay healthy for the season, another 1000-yards-receiving season is a strong possibility, no matter who is calling the shot at center.
