The quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baker Mayfield has not provided the green signal to sign a contract with the team for the next season. There were conversations between his agent and the team but the approval for the deal is yet to be provided from his end.

In an interview with Cameron Wolfe from NFL Network, the quarterback stated that the team is searching for an offensive coordinator after Dave Canales left the team. The Bucs, despite a lot of rumors, have not found a significant replacement for Canales. This is the sole reason Mayfield, who had a surprisingly good journey with the team in the 2023 season, wants to wait for someone to join as the OC.

It all just kind of depends--Obviously Tampa, we’re going through a little bit of a OC search right now. It’ll start there. They were the first ones that gave me a chance, and [I’m] thankful for them. We’ll see. Taking it one day at a time.

The quarterback had a good season despite all the odds he was forecasted to have. Though the Bucs failed to make it beyond the Divisional round in the NFC, they have found a quarterback living up to his promise.

However, if the Bucs fail to meet the expectations of the quarterback, then there are possibilities that the quarterback might leave the team in the next season. In the same interview, the quarterback said,

My agent and them, I think they engaged a little bit--But obviously when Canales left -- and happy for him, as well, getting a head coaching job, he deserves that -- but when they started the OC search, I think they know that we’ve got to know who’s calling plays before anything’s done.

Mayfield proved all the critiques wrong in 2023

After being subjected to a lot of skepticism ahead of the season, Mayfield provided the performance that justified his No. 1 Draft pick potential. He made the people his fans who expressed disgrace after seeing his name as a replacement for Tom Brady Despite a slow start, the No. 1 pick of the 2018 NFL Draft paced up and helped his team earn a spot in the playoffs.
