On July 21, 2023, the world awoke to the thrill of welcoming two of the most anticipated movies of the year, Barbie and Oppenheimer, films directed by Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan, respectively. Social media cheekily gave the polar opposite movies a catchphrase: “Barbenheimer.” Since then, the war of the tinsel town has begun, of which the sporting world wants to be part as well. When asked which movie was on their bucket list for the weekend, NFL stars such as Patrick Mahomes and Kirk Cousins expressed their choices.

At first glance, both movies are polar opposites created to attract audiences with varied tastes. However, the support the cast and crew of the two movies have shown for each other during the promotions signals their intent to draw in as many diverse eyes as possible. The lead actors, Margot Robbie, and Cillian Murphy, were seen praising each other’s work. They even shared pictures of themselves holding tickets to attend the premiere of said movies.

In a recent interview during the premiere of Netflix’s NFL show ‘Quarterback,’ a few of the NFL stars revealed which of the two movies they would be watching.

“Both are gonna be great,” said Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “I will probably go and watch Barbie with my daughter.” The Super Bowl winner has two kids: an older daughter, Sterling, and a younger son, Bronze.

Mahomes ‘Quarterback’ co-lead Kirk Cousins shared whether he would join his colleague in watching Barbie or he would show up at the theater to watch Oppenheimer. “I am an Oppenheimer guy and love history and true stories. I was just saying this to someone the other day: I can’t wait to see it,” the Minnesota Vikings signal-caller revealed.

Besides Cousins, Mahomes’ all-weather teammate Travis Kelce tried to lighten up the mood. Apparently, the wide receiver has not even heard of Oppenheimer. “I am gonna say Barbie, because what’s Oppenheimer?” Travis Kelce joked.

It looks like Gerwig’s colorful creation Barbie is leading the race. The collection of the two movies individually has been one of the best in both the United States and Canada. Moviegoers have boarded the Barbie hype train, which looks set to earn around $300 million worldwide. Nolan’s Oppenheimer is not far behind either, as it is set to cross the threshold of $165 million during the weekend.

Barbie is a movie that’s based on the ‘Barbie’ doll created by American entrepreneur Ruth Handler. Many around the globe grew up playing with it during their childhood. But few could have imagined a movie surrounding their favorite toy.

Oppenheimer, on the other hand, is a visual recreation of the life of the famous scientist Robert Oppenheimer. The German-born American is the one who created the Atomic Bomb during World War II.
