The Chicago Bears are heading in the right direction in their rebuild. They seemingly haven’t decided who is going to be their QB in the future, but they are already adding the other building pieces. In that trend, they made a massive move to add wide receiver Keenan Allen via a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers.
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Bears acquired Allen from the Los Angeles-based football team on Thursday. They are sending a 4th round draft pick in the 2024 NFL Draft in exchange for Allen.
Allen is entering the final year of his current contract that he signed back in 2020. The Chargers were on the hook for a $34.7 million salary cap hit on the wide receiver’s current contract. They reportedly asked Allen to take a pay cut to save cap space. But Allen refused to take a pay cut and was traded to the Bears as a result.
Allen has been one of the best receivers in the league for the last 11 years. So far, he has registered 10,530 receiving yards and 59 receiving touchdowns. During the 2023 season, he was the No. 1 option for the Chargers QB Justin Herbert. He caught 108 passes for 1,243 receiving yards and 7 TDs during his final campaign with the Chargers.
The Bears now have only 4 picks remaining in the upcoming draft (Nos. 1, 9, 75, and 122). But, they are expected to add more picks by either trading their quarterback Justin Fields, or trading away their first overall pick. Either way, they will have a good QB leading them in the upcoming season, and with the pieces they have added so far, they are expected to make a run for the NFC North title.
Social media reacts to the Bears acquiring Keenan Allen
The Bears trading for star wide receiver Keenan Allen sent the social media into a frenzy. The Bears fans are excited about their new offensive weapon.
Furthermore, some were also shocked that acquiring Allen only cost the Bears a fourth-round draft pick. Many believe the Chargers could’ve gotten a lot more than that in return. Check out some of the reactions attached below.
The Chicago Bears are having a great season and it could still get better since they currently have the No.1 pick in the upcoming draft. As for the Los Angeles Chargers, they have lost both of their starting wide receivers within days and will now have to add a wide receiver in the draft or free agency.
