The Chicago Bears haven’t had a great start to their NFL season. They have lost six games through eight weeks and are pretty much out of playoff contention. The team needed to make a move during the trade deadline. They made a move to acquire Washington Commanders‘ DE Montez Sweat. NFL Network Insider, Ian Rapoport, reported on Tuesday that the Bears have traded for Sweat in exchange for a second-round pick.
Sweat was a pending free agent after the season, but the Bears have now extended the pass rusher to a four-year, $98 million deal. According to Rapoport, the total deal is worth $105 million, $72.9 million of which is guaranteed money. Sweat’s annual salary of $24.5 million per year sees him crack the top five players in his position in that category.
Bears’ GM Ryan Poles was hopeful about a new deal and he said on Wednesday that it wouldn’t “take long.” Sweat was selected in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Sweat accumulated 35.5 sacks, nine forced fumbles and 85 quarterback hits during his time with the Commanders. However, the Washington-based team decided to move on from two of their most talented pass rushers in Sweat and Chase Young in their contract years.
The Bears have recorded only 10 sacks this season and, with Sweat in the lineup, they will look to produce more on that end of the field. The Bears will play the New Orleans Saints in their next game on Sunday at the Superdome.
Fans react to Montez Sweat’s monster four-year deal with the Bears
The Chicago Bears have been in the news mostly for the wrong reasons this season. The team had a disastrous start to the season, losing their first four games. Their DC resigned midseason and QB Justin Fields hasn’t looked like a franchise quarterback so far. They desperately needed to make a mark in the trade market before the deadline. They did so by acquiring Montez Sweat from the Washington Commanders.
The Bears extended Sweat to a massive four-year, $98 million deal. $72.9 million of that money is guaranteed. Sweat, 27, has been great for the Commanders since being drafted in the 2019 NFL Draft. Fans reacted to the deal and most of them were in shock with the news. Here are some of the fan reactions.
Sweat so far this season has recorded 6.5 sacks and is well on pace to break his personal best record of 9 sacks. The Commanders acquired him in the 2019 NFL draft and the edge rusher repaid them with 35.5 sacks in his five seasons with the team.
