The Cincinnati Bengals were screwed over by the NFL after their game against the Bills in week 17 got suspended. That game was canceled following Damar Hamlin’s horrific injury that shook the sports world.
By the NFL rulebook, if two teams had the same number of wins and were tied for the division title, the winners would be decided based on their win percentage, which was in favor of the Cincinnati team. However, the NFL announced that if the Bengals lost their game against the Ravens in week 18 and they both were tied for the division title, a coin toss would determine who would get the home advantage if it comes down to that.
Zac Taylor and the Bengals players did not like the NFL announcement as they believed it is unfair to them and the league should’ve followed their rulebook to decide the home-field advantage. Although it will only come down to the coin toss if the Bengals lost against their division rivals Ravens in their week 18 game. So, the Bengals came into this week’s game intending to claim their right to host a playoff game and also to show their frustrations against the NFL’s decision.
During the final minute of the first quarter, the Bengals scored their first touchdown of the game, and Joe Mixon, who scored the touchdown, had a petty celebration as he flipped a coin in the endzone to mock the league. This celebration was requested by the former Bengals wideout Chad Johnson. Furthermore, Bengals CB Eli Apple went made sure that the television broadcast caught a sign that was mocking the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
Eli Apple and the Bengals fans troll the NFL
A fan brought a well-thought-out sign of Roger Goodell’s face with a clown nose inside a giant coin-shaped banner. Moreover, after the game, the Bengals’ CB Eli Apple made sure that the cameras caught that sign.
The former first-round pick got the sign from the fan and took it to the locker room as a souvenir, but not before flashing it before the cameras. Earlier in the week, the Bengals HC Zac Taylor also has been vocal about his frustrations with the league’s decision.
However, as it turned out, the Bengals don’t have to worry about a coin toss since they took care of business in Cincinnati and beat the Ravens 27-16. They are now the sole winners of the AFC North and will get the perks of a division winner throughout the postseason.
