‘Furious’ Bill Belichick claims he didn’t bench QB Mac Jones for his ‘awful’ performance against the Cowboys as the HC suffered the biggest loss of his career
Belichick was visibly not happy over the pummeling that his defense received and a misfiring offense.

Although the Dallas Cowboys ran riot yesterday against the New England Patriots, the highlight of the game was Bill Belichick benching quarterback Mac Jones during the game. When asked about the reason behind the decision, the veteran head coach skillfully dodged the question.
Belichick, who is no stranger to facing tough situations, began the post-match press conference by stating that his team needs to improve. Well, that’s definitely the requirement for the Patriots losing 38-3 to a Trevon Diggs–less Cowboys. Despite the loss being the worst margin the 71-year-old has ever lost for the Pats, the media were curious about something else.
After answering two team-related inquiries, the press wanted to know why Mac Jones was replaced by Bailey Zappe with only 3:41 minutes remaining in the third quarter. Bill Belichick had his answer ready from the start. He said, “I didn’t think there was any point in leaving him in the game.”
He had the same reply when asked if Jones’ premature benching was due to his poor performance on the day. Without wasting any time, he uttered the same words: “I just said there was no point in leaving him in the game.”
Now the cause for concern for the New England faithful: is this a sign of the coaching staff losing faith in the 25-year-old? This could possibly signal that Jones might even sit on the sidelines against the New Orleans Saints. But Belichick quashed those speculations as well.
Mac Jones has a horror show against the Dallas Cowboys
The narrow victory over the New York Jets hinted that the Pats were finally moving in the right direction. But the Gang Greens were playing without Aaron Rodgers and were on a losing streak of their own. On top of that, Zach Wilson was struggling, like last season. So the win was merely points on the board, nothing more or nothing less.

On the other hand, the Dallas Cowboys needed to turn things around after a disappointing Week 3 result. They used the six-time Super Bowl winners as a battering ram to get their season back on track. They took the lead through a field goal in 10 minutes and never looked back, adding 35 more points to record their second-best result of the 2023 season.
Patriots quarterback Mac Jones had a howler while he was on the field. He conceded two defensive touchdowns with a fumble and horrid pick-6 to Diggs’ stand-in DarRon Bland to make it 28 for the Cowboys. Seeing the beatdown his team was getting, Bill Belichick took the former first-rounder off and Zappe in.
Mac Jones finished the game with 12 out of 21 passes completed for 150 yards and two interceptions. Zappe had 4/9 for 57 yards. In contrast, Cowboys Dak Prescott completed 28 of 31 passes for 261 yards.
