“Expectations are low immediately,” Bill Belichick sees promising flashes of Hall of Famer Julian Edelman in Jakobi Meyers
Julian Edelman, Jakoby Meyers
After missing a few games due to injury, Jakobi Meyers was back in action- and stronger than ever at the recent game against the Lions. Scoring the only offensive touchdown of the game, it is safe to say that Meyers has a bright future ahead, as Bill Belichick recently showed faith in the receiver.
Talking about his development as a player, Patriots HC Belichick compared Meyers to Julian Edelman, who has a career that skyrocketed quickly. The three-time Super Bowl winner, who became a wide receiver after being a quarterback, was widely known to be a legendary postseason performer. Bill Belichick compared Meyers and Edelman, saying, “Jakob’s [Meyers] development as a player – honestly we’ve had a lot of guys like that, come in as a rookie free agent, expectations are low immediately.
“But then as things start to improve, such as his blocking, and his overall route running and instinctive, and savviness, different but kind of like [Julian] Edelman in the development.” Belichick was quick to say that they were in no way the same type of players, but their work ethic was quite the same.
Bill Belichick stresses the importance of the development stage in creating dependable players like Jakobi Meyers and Julian Edelman
“Not saying they’re the same player, they’re not,” reiterated the coach. “But Edleman’s a guy who didn’t play much for a while and then became a great, great receiver here. One of the most dependable players we’ve ever had.”
Belichick stressed the importance of the development stage that players go through. He attributed success to hard work, which he said was the key to Meyers and Edleman both, along with the coaching. “Which Players like Julian [Edleman] and Jakobi are both good examples of players who played quarterback, however good they were or weren’t a quarterback, that’s not really the point.”
“The point is that they’ve seen the ball coming from their hand, as opposed to always being on the receiving end of it. Kind of where you wouldn’t want to throw, and how a receiver can help a quarterback, or how a receiver can kind of a fool a quarterback and make it hard for the quarterback to throw it to them.”
The clear comparison between Jakobi Meyers and Julian Edelman is a promising sign for the former.
