“Still has a long way to go”: Bill Belichick’s latest comments on Cole Strange show the coach hasn’t lost his ability to spot diamonds in the rough

Bill Belichick and Cole Strange
New England Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick is not called the greatest coach of all time for no reason. Apart from his success on the field in coaching and winning games on the regular and multiple Super Bowl appearances, his biggest asset has been his eye-to-spot talent. He took a chance on Tom Brady, a quarterback nobody thought would last in the NFL by picking him in the sixth round, he also saw the potential and versatility in Rob Gronkowski who fell to the second round in the 2010 draft, Julian Edelman, one of the most reliable wideouts was a seventh-round pick, and many other players who turned out to be integral role players to the Patriots franchise.
However, his draft selections in the last few years have been underwhelming, to say the least, I’m not talking about Mac Jones, he was a great choice, and is headed on the right path considering he has to carry the burden of replacing the greatest player to ever do it. Belichick ended up selecting Cole Strange in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft, which left a lot of fans baffled. They already had Mac Jones, why would you waste a first-round pick on drafting yet another quarterback?

“He’s moving in the right direction”: Bill Belichick has nothing but appreciation for Cole Strange.

The New England Patriots have been in dire need of receivers and they need to add defensive weapons as well, the loss of Stephon Gilmore is hard to not consider as he was one of the top dogs in that defense. However, Cole Strange may end up being one of the smartest moves that Bill has ever made or the worst, as of now, it seems like Bill Belichick may have been right on this one.
The rookie quarterback has spent a lot of time familiarizing himself with the Patriots playbook and he has also been active in the team’s offseason camp. His versatility may be the only reason Belichick considered drafting him, he’s been playing as the starting Left guard for the team heading into the season and his run blocking has been pretty good because he is pretty athletic.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Bill had a lot of praise for Strange, “Cole has been out there every day, he’s taken a lot of snaps, a lot of reps, which he needs. He has learned from them and improved fundamentally in a lot of areas. He still has a long way to go, he’s seeing a different level of player than what he saw in college from a talent standpoint. There are more looks, more identifications, and more things that the defenses do to cause the offense problems, we’ve seen that in the preseason games and practices. The multiplicity of things that those teams did, more in (joint)practice than in the games, but some of it showed up in the games as well so the wheels are turning. Cole has done a good job of learning from situations, improving his techniques, improving his fundamentals, and improving his communication. Still a long way to go but very much moving in the right direction,” Belichick concluded.
The good news for Strange is that he will get a chance to play, if not quarterback, he has already been selected as a starting left guard which is impressive, it is not easy to play both positions as they demand completely different things from you. Will Bill’s bet on Cole pay off? We will have to see that in the regular season.
