If any coach can talk eye-to-eye with the referee, it is Bill Belichick. The New England Patriots head coach demonstrated just that when he threw a red challenge flag at one of the officials on Sunday night against the Miami Dolphins.
It was late in the third quarter when the Patriots, trailing 17-2, made a charge toward the Dolphins’ half. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson led the attack but was hit in 3 and 2. However, it looked to have crossed the line to move the chain for the Pats.
However, the match officials did not give the verdict in favor of the home side. They deemed the play short of a first down after measuring it, which left Bill Belichick furious on the sidelines. Then he pulled out a red flag from his sock and contemplated for a moment. One of the referees was moving the sideline chain right next to the veteran coach. It ticked him off so much that he threw the flag in frustration, signaling that he wanted them to replay and take a closer look.
Bill Belichick and the Patriots failed to contain the Dolphins attacks
Since 2020, the New England Patriots don’t feel the same anymore. It’s no surprise that teams don’t get easily intimidated while traveling to Foxborough these days, unlike in the mid-2000s. That horrible trajectory continued on Sunday when they faced the Miami Dolphins. If the opening-day loss to the Eagles was a nail-biter, the game against the Phins should be a wake-up call for Bill Belichick, who failed to come up with countermeasures to stop Tua Tagovailoa.
Throughout the match, they were a nuisance for the Patriots’ defense. They prepared for Tyreek Hill, but Raheem Mostert stole the show. The veteran wide receiver had 18 carries for 121 yards and scored 2 touchdowns.
However, it’s impossible to keep the cheetah out of the game for too long. Hill and Tagovailoa combined for a 2-yard touchdown to extend the Dolphins lead to 16. Tua Tagovailoa ended the game with 21 pass completions from 30 for 249 yards.
It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Bill Belichick. His third-year quarterback, Mac Jones, had a relatively bright outing. Jones compiled 31 out of 42 passes for 231 yards, threw one touchdown, and gave an interception. But he was sacked 4 times by the Miami defense. Next, they will travel to the Big Apple to face the New York Jets on September 24.
