The New York Giants were going through one of their darkest hours in the 1980s when Bill Parcells took over as head coach and turned their fortunes around. But who knew that even after retirement, he would be a shining light for them?
Long-time Giants scribe Gary Myers recently went on WFAN’s “Boomer & Gio” on Friday morning. He discussed his new book that will be launching soon, titled “Once a Giant: A Story of Victory, Tragedy, and Life After Football.”
In the book, there are several unheralded stories about players and coaches. One of which reveals how Bill Parcells became the financial savior of more or less 20 former players.
“Bill has loaned out $4 million to 20 players that played for him who come to him in this financial crisis,” Myers told Jerry Recco and Joe Benigno. “It’s just incredibly generous what he’s done.”
Myers asked the 82-year-old why he would do that when he was aware that he wouldn’t get anything in return. Parcells smiled and replied, “These guys have sacrificed so much for me with their bodies and their commitment.”
“I don’t think I know of any other coach who writes checks to his former players in financial need,” Myres concluded, as per the New York Post. Besides Bill Parcells, he interviewed Bill Belichick, Lawrence Taylor, and a few others for the book.

Bill Parcells saved the New York Giants from darkness
The Giants struggled for most of the 1970s, recording only one positive season. Fast forward to 1983, and the New York football team endured one of the worst seasons of that era, recording only three wins.
Fortunately, Bill Parcells was given the baton to lead, and he managed to turn their fortunes instantly. In his first year, they won nine matches and made it to the divisional title game.
During this time, Parcells came under heavy criticism. He wanted to start Scott Brunner at quarterback over Phil Simms. General Manager George Young, who was against the idea, wanted to fire Parcells. But his replacement, Howard Schnellenberger, refused to join, and Young had to eat his words.
The Parcells and Simms duo quickly became a force to be reckoned with. They won the Giants first two Super Bowls in 1986 and 1990. He has won several awards, including the New York Giants’ Ring of Honor. He was twice named the UPI NFL Coach of the Year (1986 and 1994).
