NFL Legend Bill Romanowski has landed himself in trouble with the federal government. On June 21, the US Department of Justice claimed that the 57-year-old and his wife, Julie, owe more than $15 million in back taxes.
The former Denver Broncos player is facing charges over unpaid back taxes dating to 1998, including penalties and interest. In the 18-page complaint, acting Assistant Attorney General David Hubbert in Oakland’s U.S. District Court of Northern California said Bill Romanowski and Julie had been using funds from N53 to pay $10,000 a month in rent on their home.
“The Romanowskis’ have improperly used N53 to thwart the IRS’s collection of individual income tax assessments,” said the complaint. It also read that the Romanowskis’ “have refused to pay the assessments.” Prosecutors said the N53 was the Romanowskis’ “alter ego” and requested the court order them to pay back $15,330,277.83 plus interest.
Bad boy Bill Romanowski
Bill Romanowski is never far from controversy. Besides his recent legal trouble, the Super Bowl winner has had various altercations with fans and fellow players alike. He may have lived his best life while playing for the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos, but his bad-boy image as a Raider is what he is remembered for the most.
Who can forget the Monday Night Football incident when Romanowski spat on former 49ers wide receiver J. J. Stokes? The incident will forever be a stain on his CV. However, most people moved on because of his Super Bowl triumph that season.
In 1995, Romanowski broke Giants player Dave Meggett‘s finger while the latter was trying to stop him from scoring. While playing for the Philadelphia Eagles, he kicked Arizona Cardinals Larry Centers in the head five times. Romanowski was fined $4500.
Two years later, in a preseason game, he smashed the Jaw of Carolina Panthers quarterback Kerry Collins. The league fined Romanowski $20,000 this time. In 1998, he racked up around $42,000 in fines. That same year, he punched Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez.
One of his most famous scandals happened in 2003 when he uppercut Raiders teammate Marcus Williams and damaged his eye socket during training. Williams filed a lawsuit in Oakland Superior Court, demanding $3.8 million. However, he was only rewarded $340,000 for lost wages and medical expenses. Williams was forced to retire.
In his brutal 16 years as a professional footballer, Bill ‘Romo’ Romanowski racked up 1,116 tackles, 39.5 sacks, 18 interceptions, and 16 forced fumbles. He won four Super Bowls (two with the 49ers and two with the Broncos).
