The NFL is no stranger to wild moments. Over the years, the league has had plays wherein, in addition to the mere talent of an athlete, Lady Luck’s contribution ensured that the play went through smoothly. In today’s matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Minnesota Vikings, fans got to see one of the most bizarre interceptions in league history.

The interception was made by B. J. Hill, the defensive tackle for the Bengals. The play was made on Nick Mullens, the Vikings QB. As Hill had attempted to tackle him but was unsuccessful and landed on the field, Mullens, who was attempting to avoid pressure from other defensive players, did not see the tackle right behind him and, as a result, ended up tripping. Here is where things got interesting.

Mullens decided to throw the ball away as he was going down, which in itself was a bad decision because he should have protected the ball at that stage. Down goes Mullens, the pass thrown by him bounced off of Hill’s helmet, slid into his hands but just like a classic game of hot potato, the ball was not willing to come under his possession with that ease.

Lucky for Hill, Nick Mullens saved his butt, or to put it in a more apt manner, Nick Mullens’ butt came in clutch for B.J. Hill. The ball deflected off of the quarterback’s rear end and then went up in the air before being caught by the defensive tackle. All of this happened within a span of three seconds.

This play was ruled an interception as the ball never made contact with the ground, thereby the play was still going on. It is already one of the most bizarre plays fans have seen this season. Here’s how they reacted to it on social media:

Rookie mistake right there, surprised to see Mullens make that call.

Benched the passtronaut for the A**tronaut.

Still hard to believe that this play happened but it really did. Mullens had a bad night today as he had 2 interceptions along with 2 touchdowns. Joshua Dobbs was benched by the team as the QB was struggling a bit in his last two games and the team decided to head in a different direction this week. Cincinnati ended up taking the W over Minnesota as they beat them 27-24.
